A Heritage of Optical Excellence
It all began in Germany, where Helmut’s father, Helmut Igel Sr., started his optical journey at just 15 years old. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1963 with his wife Helga and young son, he brought his elite German training to New York, quickly earning respect in Manhattan’s optical scene.
In 1972, Helmut Sr. founded an optical distribution company in San Diego. He partnered with Neostyle, a leading German eyewear brand that soon exploded in popularity when the now-iconic Nautic frame was famously worn by Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sammy Davis Jr. This launched Neostyle into the spotlight as one of the most celebrated German eyewear brands of its time.
The Next Generation: From Global Waters to Local Vision
Helmut Igel II
As a teen, Helmut Igel II (our current founder) joined the family business, helping with inventory and logistics. But his journey didn’t stop there. At 19, he set off on a 10-month backpacking trip through Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, which led him to the California Maritime Academy. He later worked as a 2rd Mate Deck Officer on oil tankers and cruise ships, eventually meeting his wife Julie and starting a family of three daughters.
After years at sea, Helmut returned to his roots and stepped into the family optical business, becoming President of Neostyle USA. Over the next 25+ years, he expanded the company, distributing premium German collections like Flair (rimless eyewear) and Ete (frames inlaid with real feathers), and even founded his own brand, Triton Sunglasses.
A New Vision: Mobile Eyecare is Born
After decades in wholesale, Helmut saw the need for a more personal, client-focused approach. He launched Mobile Eyecare to bring high-end, personalized optical services directly to customers’ homes, offices, and even virtual screens.
With his industry knowledge and expert eye for style and fit, Helmut now helps clients find the perfect frames to match their face, personality, and lifestyle — all at factory-direct prices.
